Abstract

This study examines the duties and roles of spouses within the family framework through the interpretive lens of surah An-Nisa verse 34, employing a thematic analytical approach within a multidisciplinary perspective. The verse presents the position of men as qawwām over women, understood not as mere authority but as leadership grounded in responsibility, compassion, and justice. The research adopts a library-based methodology, integrating classical and contemporary exegetical sources, Islamic jurisprudence, family psychology, and gender studies. The findings reveal that the husband’s role as family leader encompasses responsibilities such as providing sustenance, offering guidance, and safeguarding honor, while the wife contributes by preserving dignity, educating children, and managing household affairs. This relationship is characterized by reciprocity and must be conducted in accordance with principles of consultation and mutual respect. Furthermore, the verse offers guidance for the gradual and prudent resolution of domestic disputes. In contemporary contexts, the interpretation of qawwām continues to evolve dynamically, requiring a maqāṣid-based reinterpretation of al-sharī‘ah to ensure its relevance amid social transformation. This analysis demonstrates that Surah An-Nisa verse 34 not only regulates the structural dynamics of family life but also embodies spiritual, ethical, and educational values essential for nurturing a household marked by tranquility, affection (mawaddah), and compassion.
